Wine Dinner : Tenuta dell’Ornellaia - Italian 1st Growth

Friday 8th of March

7 pm

£99 per person

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village, the view extends far out to sea, and on a clear day, the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen.

The mild maritime climate and the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, micro-vinification and ageing.

This ambitious estate was launched in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori, the cousin of the owners of the nearby Tenuta San Guido (of Sassicaia fame).   Ornellaia is a Cabernet/Merlot wine blend.   Often spoken of in the same breath as Sassicaia, in reality, the wines couldn’t be more different. Ornellaia is made from all four of the main Bordeaux varieties, with Merlot playing the supporting role to Cabernet Sauvignon, while Sassicaia is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with the supporting role being Cabernet Franc.

Ornellaia, the estate’s most famous wine, is created from vines planted in 1982, whereas its second wine, Le Serre Nuove, is sourced from younger vines. The grapes are all hand-picked, and the various vineyard plots are vinified separately for greater precision. However, both Ornellaia and Le Serre Nuove are made in exactly the same way.

We are matching 7of
