Wine dinner with Viña Leyda of Leyda Valley, Chile

Friday 26th of April

7.30pm

£79 per person

Viña Leyda is one of Chile´s finest producers, exemplary for its consistently rewarding cool-climate wines that offer outstanding value for money and wonderful diversity.

Viña Leyda's range is superlative: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Gris, with barely a weak link between them. It´s hard to believe that the property has only been going since 1997, having pioneered the Leyda/San Antonio appellation, which didn´t exist before its arrival.  With vineyards barely 3km from the shoreline this is a true cool climate coastal region.

We are delighted that Javier Letamendi from Viña Leyda is here on the 26th of April to show us these exceptional pioneering wines.   Along with an 8-course menu, we will try their Reserva wines along with single vineyard expressions as well as their world-class 'Lot' wines.

Background

The Leyda Valley lies to the west of Santiago, just 14km from the Pacific, and its proximity to the sea ensures cooling summer breezes which whip across the vineyard from 10 am each day, moderating temperatures and cleansing the vineyard. Until recently the landscape was dominated by wheat and barley but in 1997 the Fernandez family, together with Gustavo Llona, recognised the potential of the area for growing grapes and established Viña Leyda.     They recognised the valley's vine-growing potential was huge but that for vines to flourish the region needed water supply for irrigation.  So began the colossal project to lay underground pipes that travelled a whopping 8km to bring water from the Maipo river.

In 2006 renowned Master of Wine, Tim Atkin said of Leyda Valley: “This thrilling, recently planted area has the potential to become one of the New World’s best wine regions. Remember the name, because it could become as famous as Marlborough, Stellenbosch, McLaren Vale and the Napa Valley”    13 years later it is now regarded as one of the new worlds finest cool climate wine producing areas and the wines sit alongside the best in the world.
